The Surge, a Dark Souls-inspired science fiction brawler, is getting a sequel. Publisher Focus Home Interactive and developer Deck13 announced the renewal of their partnership, as well as a release window of 2019.
The team behind Lords of the Fallen, a dark fantasy action role-playing game, surprised many when it announced The Surge, in which players do battle against robotic and human enemies with futuristic exoskeletons. But the game proved very popular among fans, and even received critical praise.
Deck13 seems eager to double-down on what made the first game so successful.
“The Surge 2 keeps what fans and critics loved about the original,” it said, “while also expanding greatly upon the formula. The Surge 2 takes place in a brand new environment: a sprawling, devastated city with larger and more ambitious level design, made possible by Deck13’s upgraded and improved engine.”
It also said that it planned to expand on the game’s “limb targeting system,” which allows players to do damage to discrete locations on an enemy and preserve other weapons and components to later add to their own exoskeleton. Deck13 also promised “more abilities, weapons, implants, and drones.”
